Huntsville Home Inspection: Plumbing Terms Explained
For buyers in Huntsville, Madison, Harvest, Hazel Green and across Madison County.
Request a plumberWhether you're buying a new build in Madison or an older home near downtown, the inspection will likely include plumbing notes. Here is what common ones mean. Your inspector is the best guide to your report, and a licensed plumber can explain options and costs.
Water heaters
TPR valve — The relief valve needs a discharge pipe. See water heaters.
Expansion tank — A small tank on the cold line that absorbs pressure; missing ones are often noted.
Past expected life — The tank is older than typical; plan a replacement.
Pipes
PEX — Flexible plastic supply pipe common in newer homes.
Polybutylene — Gray plastic pipe from the 1980s and early 1990s prone to failure.
Crawl space leak — Water found under the house. See leak detection.
Drains, sewer and septic
Sewer scope — A camera inspection of the main line; roots or sags may be noted. More: red clay and sewer lines.
Septic system — Rural homes may need a separate septic inspection. See sewer and septic lines.
No cleanout — No outdoor access to the main line.
Gas
Uncoated brass connector — An old appliance connector that should be replaced. See gas line repair.
Drip leg missing — A sediment trap before an appliance.
New construction can still show inspection notes, such as missing expansion tanks or drain lines with poor slope, while older homes are more likely to show polybutylene or aging water heaters. Either way, the notes give you a clear list to discuss with a plumber.
A plumber can price flagged items before closing and walk you through the house. See drain cleaning.
